Dell upgrades PowerProtect to streamline servers and fortify businesses against cyber threats

Dell Technologies, a prominent player in dedicated backup hardware, has announced significant updates to its PowerProtect range, designed to bolster businesses’ ability to recover swiftly from cyberattacks while managing costs effectively.

Dell Technologies, a prominent player in dedicated backup hardware, has announced significant updates to its PowerProtect range, designed to bolster businesses’ ability to recover swiftly from cyberattacks while managing costs effectively.

The upgrades are engineered to help businesses across the UK and beyond modernise their data centres, equipping them to handle the intense demands of artificial intelligence (AI) the ever-evolving landscape of digital workloads – and to bolster fortification against cyberattack.

Dell’s new offerings are also centred around the concept of disaggregated resources. The approach breaks down computing power, data storage, and network connectivity into shared pools, allowing for greater efficiency and the ability to adapt quickly to a wider variety of computing tasks.

According to reports, the updated PowerProtect DD6410 appliance offers faster data recovery times and data deduplication, which helps to reduce storage space requirements. For organisations demanding faster recovery, the All-Flash Ready Node solution delivers accelerated restore speeds, consumes less power, and boasts a smaller physical footprint within the data centre.

Additionally, Dell has introduced key updates to its PowerProtect Data Manager software. These include the implementation of anomaly detection, which helps businesses quickly identify unusual activity that could indicate a security breach.

The software also now offers improved support for backing up virtual machines running on platforms like Microsoft Hyper-V and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation. Additionally, Dell has streamlined the process of archiving data to its ObjectScale platform for long-term retention, providing a more efficient way to manage data lifecycles.

Improved cyber resilience in brief

The upgrades increase business resilience against cyberthreats by providing enhancements to the following areas:

  • Scalable and efficient data protection: Dell PowerProtect DD6410, with a capacity of 12 TB to 256 TB, for commercial, small business and remote site environments delivers up to 91% faster restores and scalability for traditional and modern workloads plus efficient operations with industry-leading up to 65X deduplication.
  • All-Flash performance and efficiency: Dell PowerProtect All-Flash Ready Node delivers more secure and efficient data protection with a 220 TB capacity system that offers over 61% faster restore speeds, uses up to 36% less power, and features a 5X smaller footprint.
  • Strengthened enterprise resiliency: PowerProtect Data Manager updates help customers quickly identify security risks with Anomaly Detection, manage Microsoft Hyper-V and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation virtual machine backups and easily archive data to Dell ObjectScale for long-term retention.

“Modern applications require a new breed of infrastructure that will help customers keep pace with everchanging data centre demands,” said Arthur Lewis, president, Infrastructure Solutions Group, Dell Technologies.

“Organisations are refocusing their IT strategies to take a disaggregated approach to infrastructure that improves resource management and simplifies management complexity,” added Simon Robinson, principal analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group, now part of Omdia.
