In a first for Brazil, both Internet Exchanges (IXs) will be connected from day one, enabling both local and domestic peering while opening access to DE-CIX’s global IX ecosystem – the largest interconnection ecosystem in the world.
DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator, has announced the launch of its first IXs in Brazil: DE-CIX Sao Paulo, and DE-CIX Rio de Janeiro.
The inauguration took place in the renowned Villaggio JK in Sao Paulo with invited guests from the interconnection industry and representatives from enterprises and organisations in Brazil and beyond. The two new IXs are operated by DE-CIX Brazil, a 100% owned subsidiary of the DE-CIX Group, and are both data centre and carrier neutral.
In a first for Brazil, the two IXs will be interconnected from Day 1, enabling not only local ‘peering’, or network interconnection, but also remote peering both domestically and internationally.
DE-CIX Brazil will be integrated into the operator’s global IX ecosystem through connections to DE-CIX’s IXs in New York, Lisbon, Madrid, Frankfurt – the largest IX in Europe – and beyond, employing both south to north and south to south Atlantic connectivity corridors. This will enable connected customers to reach thousands of local, regional and international networks that together form the largest interconnection ecosystem in the world.
The distributed and neutral IXs are housed in multiple data centres in their respective markets, with DE-CIX Sao Paulo in Elea Data Centers SPO1, Ascenty SP4, and Equinix SP4, and DE-CIX Rio de Janeiro in Elea Data Centers RJO1 and Equinix RJ2. DE-CIX’s new IXs fill a gap in the Brazilian market with their range of SLA-backed enterprise-grade interconnection solutions, as well as increasing redundancy and resiliency options for Brazilian network operators.
“With DE-CIX Sao Paulo and DE-CIX Rio de Janeiro open for business, customers can now benefit from a more resilient and globally integrated digital interconnection ecosystem in Brazil,” said Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX.
“By enhancing local interconnection, attracting international players to join the community, and committing to strengthening the digital infrastructure in the country, we provide high-performance, secure and scalable interconnection services. The growing digital economy in Brazil requires state-of-the-art connectivity, ensuring that data exchange happens locally and efficiently. The two new IXs open up a complementary offering that further enriches Brazil as the second largest market in the world by network count.”
DE-CIX offers its interconnection services in 60 locations in Europe, Africa, North and South America, the Middle East, and Asia. Accessible from data centres in over 600 cities world-wide, DE-CIX interconnects thousands of network operators (carriers), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), content providers and enterprise networks from more than 100 countries, and offers peering, cloud and other interconnection services.
Founded in 1995, the company is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025. DE-CIX in Frankfurt, Germany, is one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world, with a data volume of almost 45 Exabytes per year (as of 2024) and close to 1100 connected networks.
Close to 250 colleagues from over 35 different nations form the foundation of the DE-CIX success story in Germany and around the world. Since the beginning of the commercial Internet, DE-CIX has had a decisive influence – in a range of leading global bodies, such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) – on co-defining guiding principles for the Internet of the present and the future.
As the operator of critical IT infrastructure, DE-CIX bears a great responsibility for the seamless, fast, and secure data exchange between people, enterprises, and organisations at its locations around the globe.
