Hot Topic: Applying 2024 lessons to 2025 strategies

The development of the 2024 data centre market has been shaped by various influential factors, one of the most significant being the surge in AI adoption. As AI continues its upward trajectory, it has created a ripple effect reverberating throughout every corner of the data centre landscape. But that’s not all; we must also consider how other defining trends – such as power demand and supply – will continue to impact operations and how sustainability will remain at the core of business strategies.

AI/ML

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) continue to redefine the data centre landscape, with their transformative impact set to persist well into the future. Businesses are harnessing the power of AI and ML to optimise business processes, manage workloads and generate wider efficiencies – invaluable to modern ways of working. However, the next 12 months may require organisations to become more selective with AI to ensure ROI aligns with business goals and strategic vision.

Power/Energy

Data centre power consumption will remain a key challenge in 2025 as data centres remain committed to maintaining uptime and ensuring a seamless experience for end-users, all the while supporting AI workloads. Over the course of this year, we have seen data centre providers endeavour to balance sustainability efforts with power availability and expect this to remain a significant challenge throughout 2025, particularly in an attempt to meet carbon neutrality goals by 2030.

Sustainability

Over the past 12 months, a consistent focus has remained around sustainability as businesses make it their mission to reduce impact on the environment whilst keeping up with digital demands. Whether it’s making more use of renewable resources or introducing eco-friendly packaging, new initiatives are coming to fruition and businesses are getting more creative. The number of data centre facilities using more energy-efficient materials has amplified.

Conclusion

Data centres are an integral part of critical national infrastructure so it’s crucial for data centre organisations to better understand how to balance growth with sustainability, promising longevity for all.

2024 is now history; tomorrow’s a mystery and I’m excited to see what 2025 has in store for the data centre industry.

And to those who celebrate, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for supporting Intelligent Data Centres – we’ll be back in the new year with more news, hot off the press!
