DE-CIX expands to Brazil with new Internet Exchanges in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

DE-CIX has announced its expansion to Brazil, with its first two locations in South America – the fifth continent where DE-CIX has a presence.

The newly established entity DE-CIX Brazil is a wholly owned subsidiary of the DE-CIX Group, and the company will start its operations with IXs in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

DE-CIX Brazil will be integrated into the operator’s global IX ecosystem through connections to DE-CIX New York, DE-CIX Lisbon and DE-CIX Madrid – using diverse routes across the Atlantic – from day 1.

The IXs are planned to be hosted in multiple data centres in each location, following DE-CIX’s distributed, data centre and carrier-neutral approach.

With the ready-for-service date expected in Q2 2025, the DE-CIX Internet Exchange in Sao Paulo will kick off in the Elea Data Centers SP01, the Equinix SP4 and the Ascenty SP4 facilities.

In Rio de Janeiro, DE-CIX will start its Brazilian endeavour in the Elea Data Centers facility RJ01 and the Equinix RJ2 data centre. The two new Brazilian IXs will be the first IXs in the country to offer a full set of enterprise-grade interconnection services, including DE-CIX’s Cloud Exchange capabilities, Cloud ROUTER and the Microsoft Azure Peering Service (MAPS), in addition to peering services.

The two IXs will be interconnected, allowing customers to access peering and cloud connectivity solutions remotely in-country.

Further, the IXs will be directly interconnected with DE-CIX New York and DE-CIX’s IXs in Southern Europe, employing both South-to-North and South-to-South Atlantic connectivity corridors and enabling connected customers to reach thousands of local, regional and international networks that together form the largest interconnection ecosystem in the world.

“We are delighted to be entering Brazil, a massive market with 165 million Internet users and more than 10,000 networks,” said Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX. “DE-CIX is proud to be bringing our complete portfolio of high-performance interconnection services to Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro to support the continued digital transformation of the Brazilian economy, one of the strongest economies in the world.

“Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and enterprises alike will be able to leverage local, regional and international interconnection opportunities, especially with the USA and Southern Europe – where we already have many Brazilian networks at our exchanges.”

With the Brazilian market entry, DE-CIX enters an already strong interconnection market and sees itself as well-placed to offer solutions to meet the accelerating demand for redundancy and resiliency.

“Brazil is the only country of such a market volume anywhere in the world to still have so few IXs of a significant size serving its population. A complementary offering on the market provides opportunities for redundancy and greater choice for network operators, as well as attracting new players to enter the market, benefitting the entire digital ecosystem,” added Ivanov.

“Beyond this, DE-CIX is the first IX operator to offer a full range of enterprise-grade interconnection and cloud connectivity services. This is another exciting step in the evolution of Brazil, and we are proud to be a part of it,” Ivanov said.
