EcoDataCenter has acquired parts of a former papermill plant in Borlänge, Sweden to expand its operations.
The site, spanning over 20 acres, will have at least 240MW power capacity.
This is a milestone in EcoDataCenter’s expansion journey, which, together with the previous establishment of data centres in nearby Falun, turns the region into a powerhouse for European AI infrastructure.
The surge in demand for AI capabilities has positioned the Nordics as one of the most favourable regions globally for deploying high-performance compute solutions.
Advanced engineering capabilities together with the availability of land and power have been instrumental in driving this growth. EcoDataCenter’s acquisition of the Borlänge site reflects its strategic response to this demand surge.
“We are currently establishing a leading company designing AI infrastructure and data centres,” said Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter. “Our services and expertise are highly sought after in the market. Borlänge is a very important asset for us to meet the market demand and continue to scale the company.”
The new site will significantly enhance EcoDataCenter’s clients’ ability to scale, given its strategic location near the company’s initial establishment in Falun and adding significant capacity 240MW+.
Construction will commence as soon as the necessary permits are secured, with the aim of having the first data centres ready by 2027. The proximity to the existing site will allow EcoDataCenter to leverage its established partner ecosystem ensuring local job opportunities.
“This location is perfect for us. We can use the same partner ecosystem as we have established in the region as well as connect the two sites, giving clients the potential to build some of the world’s biggest compute clusters,” Michelson added.
EcoDataCenter remains committed to advancing the capabilities of a responsible AI infrastructure. The company looks forward to the opportunities this new site will bring to its clients while enhancing Sweden’s AI infrastructure capabilities.
The political majority in Borlänge supported the agreements signed between Borlänge Municipality and EcoDataCenter.
