PoP-ulating the data centre space

PoP-ulating the data centre space

Demand. A word we are seeing more and more frequently in the data centre space – but how do we accommodate it in such large quantities? A solution to relieving the pressure on a network and increasing connectivity options is by way of expansion. Companies are widening their data centre footprint and introducing more Points of Presence (PoPs) to accommodate such demand, benefitting from increased energy efficiency.

PoPs are physical locations which house the operational aspects of data centres, enabling high-speed connections to the Internet to be established – and are a critical component of connectivity. They are key to Digital Transformation in the data centre space as they offer high-speed and low-latency connectivity solutions to end-users.

Arelion is just one example of an organisation expanding its reach through PoPs, through its recent investment in the Florida peninsula. According to the organisation’s recent press release, the state of Florida has been dubbed the ‘Silicon Coast’ due to its recent tech boom, with Tampa experiencing a 30% growth in tech jobs over the past five years. Neighbouring St. Petersburg is also a hotbed of tech investment, with a US$20 million innovation centre projected to create 1,200 tech jobs in the area.

Creating connectivity hubs is critical to increase connectivity options as well as improving flexibility. IT providers are able to reap the benefits of connecting through multiple locations via one single system, while also strengthening their networks and enhancing their ability to deliver high-speed Internet access and connectivity.

These strategic expansions are instrumental in enhancing and strengthening connectivity ecosystems by supporting growing technology hubs. We recently saw GlobalNet, a Dutch backbone provider, confirm its expansion into Central Europe with a new Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Warsaw. The launch of this PoP in the capital of Poland – based at Equinix WA1 data centre – shows the company’s commitment to enhancing its network across Central Europe – a significant connectivity route. This initiative plays a strategic role in enabling the company to expand its investment across Europe and reach new customers.

What we can draw from this is that organisations are bolstering their interconnection capabilities to meet the requirements of evolving technology. Providing a robust and scalable IT infrastructure is essential to support continued growth and innovation in the long-term.
